" Roto " is an art project aiming at producing short films based on " Rotoscoping " ; an animation technique, based on frame - by - frame tracing and image manipulating of pre - recorded live - action film images, in artists ' own stylistic techniques, thus resulting in a unique visual effect imagery .. Inspired by " The Choice " movie, a revolutionary project, considered among the milestones of the 70s Egyptian cinema .. Directed by Youssef Shahin, who was strongly concerned with the visual composition of the scenes in an avant - garde manner, fit for his daring representation of social and cultural controversy, and his open tackling of taboo issues . |

The idea of " Roto " was initiated by Passage 35; an art & culture venue concerned with encouraging young artists and sponsoring productions in the fields of contemporary art . The project joined forces of experienced artists in the fields of visual arts, audio art, and performance, leading a team of 12 selected young artists through a set of workshops and discussion sessions, aiming at capturing the essence of " The Choice " , finding a point of interest, then reconstructing individual projects in reference to the scenes of the original movie, produced in own artistic style .

Workshops were directed by Sherief El Azama, Shereen El Ansary, in collaboration with Magdi Mostafa, and Islam Kamal . The project is curated by Ahmed Foula and Nagla Samir . 18/10/2008.. The project started, by a number of introductory sessions directed by curators Ahmed Foula and Nagla Samir. 17/11/2008.. an open call was released for artists to submit projects' proposals. 20 artists submitted for the call, and 12 where chosen by a committee of artists; Sherief El Aazma, Shereen El Ansary, Mahmoud Refaat, and curators, 29/11/2008. Workshops started 13/12/2008 till 11/3/2009. Artists Islam Kamal and Magdi Mostafa contributed to the direction of workshops, and production of some projects. 11 films where produced during the first "Roto" project. |
