History of Alexandria’s Art Museum and Library

First- Art Museum
The museum is open at the library building. It has several art galleries, art library and a cultural centre dedicated to concerts and cultural seminars. The museum has also been the venue for Alexnadira Biennale for Mediterranean Countries since 1955. In the meantime, its 1381 exhibits represent paintings, graphics, drawings and sculptures by renowned artists.
Second-Art Library (the municipality’s library)
The library, built in 1892, first occupied an adjacent building to the Graeco-Roman Museum. However, it was destroyed during World War Two in 1940 and in 1948 it was rebuilt and upgraded to act as a library. In 1998 the Ministry of Culture’s Sector of Fine Art took charge of the library. Its invaluable assets are represented by 200, 000 titles in different languages and scientific fields. The most invaluable title is the 11-volume book “Description of Egypt’, which was compiled by French scientists and historians during the French expedition in Egypt.
