Essays

- Artist Muhammad Taha Hussein is one of those artists who are characterized for leadership, comprehensiveness and Institution. The Egyptian Artistic Movement knew him since the beginning of 60`s exploding his creative energy in different branches of art, and participating and establishing a pioneering role in opening horizons of fine thinking to worlds of artistic movement and directing its courses; hence, his artistic vision started out of his belief in the importance of message, and the necessity of art. (Taha Hussein) felt the responsibility to put, along with his concerned fellow artists, the artistic movement in its appropriate place in the Egyptian civilization system exceeding the restriction of events, situations and the fixed legacies to comprehensive human issues using the patterns achieved by ancient civilizations like Pharaonic and Islamic ones to discover worlds of his creativity.
-In 1959 artist Taha Hussein presented his first attempts and creative experiments of Arabic writings with his colleague in Dusseldorf Academy artist Maher Ra`ef, and in 1964 he presented his first attempts in colored graphics in Egypt.
-During the last 40 years, Taha Hussein was able to boost his most important creations without his energy being confused due to the trends of local and international market of art; since his youth, he was committed to art and its methodology.
-Though being a Professor then a Dean in Faculty of Applied Arts consumed part of his time, this never took him away from serving art and culture, nor from his main concern of creativity.
- When we follow the long artistic life of artist Muhammad Taha Hussein, we will enjoy his permanent search within his open internal world where he exceeded with his contemplations the temptation of imitating nature and reality searching for a world that does not know shackles, while gripping the elements of his artistic experience through which he gained both national and international appreciation. For any artist has to try deepening the steps of success and search for ways of widening the experience which gained appreciation; so that this experience would be an exceptional port for the Egyptian Fine Movement. Step by step this led him to search within himself, and also his jealousy of his identity led him to melt scenes in things he contemplates.
- Well read artist Muhammad Taha Hussein in his project (Thinking about Art) searches in elements of environment and legacy for many visual forms that trigger with its musical symphonies pleasure in the spirit, and he is still working on this project for many years till now as he is convinced that world`s vision can be reflected and defined through making images, forms and objects, and that the reflection of such images should not be explained in a descriptive way, but rather in a rational and sensitive way based on contemplation and concentration.
-For Taha Hussein the process of creation is based on perception, contemplation and intuition starting from a huge intellectual stock that he worked really hard to collect, and counting on this intellectual, scientific and experimental stock which qualifies him to exceed fixed legacies and decode its symbols and analyze them, and also innovates modern language which becomes art in itself - conclusion of interaction for expression of the essential of creative work.
- The permanent connection between artist Muhammad Taha Hussein and the basic daily issues; Hence his awareness of the ability of creative person to create his own world, breathe life in it, and activate his role in life led to his concern of all what is essential in objects, and what constitutes the base upon which all his works stand.
- Taha Hussein surprises us with his ability of using different materials and techniques in various fields of visual arts; as he presents pots, sculpted objects, hollow holes, printing works, installations, drawing via weaving.
- when we contemplate Taha Hussein`s forms in arts like painting, drawing, drilling, and printing work, we find it something between these natural or heritage elements and graphical trend.
- He is an impressionistic, abstractive and magician. He supports this distinctive graphic choice by choosing permanently changing shapes expressing his rejection to follow any stereotype or preset item for in its content it is a structural, connotative art avoiding dogmas and rhymes of mythology, as if he is a maker of visual values which absorb heritage and life of Egyptian, Arab and Islamic logic, and hence he tries to fix them via genuine transformations and innovations.
- The world of Taha Hussein is an open endless space, an infinite world of signals, a glowing extraordinary world of signals. For the violent rushing lines in some of his paintings reminds us with the vitality of Arabic Calligraphy. Thus, lines and colors in his works disappear as if melting in one order.
- These signals which are spreading in the painting take us back to mysteries of old ages when human mind used to go along with both time and culture, and the current moment and the moment in the memory. These signals are also full of sentiments that stimulate our imagination, and reveal a charming mixture which combines between intelligence and precise technique. Not to talk about ceramic and pottery formations as if being torn out from nature, and bearing chronological geological toil.
- There is an intimacy indicated by tangibles which dominate, with its typical ecology, form itself. These forms come out of fire new creatures challenging its seclusion as if being burnt in fire of the furnace for purification; so the material transforms and is formed in shapes that give us a sense of its internal solidity, and call on us to come and unite with it.
- Question quivers which is a completion, so we have to stop searching for molds. For these things are not forms, but rather a crossing point, holes in the memories which torn us out of our existence, and throw us at ancient ages that touches the origins of things and its primitive energy: vitality, fertility, extreme desire to go in depth as if his works have a skin, when you touch it you immediately find yourself attracted to the inside and even beyond.
- Thus seeing his works with your eyes is not enough, but you have to see it with your heart. Artist Taha Hussein surprises his audience with his comprehensive exhibition at Gezira Arts Center by his panorama painting (Century of Creation) of 6m long which he produced in 2000; in this painting he proposed endless questions of the 20th century which defined states of human interactive intellect: art, vision, philosophy, and formation.
- Pioneering lies in our intellectual concern, since every age has its own stereotypes varying in its external techniques, yet the common base is their concern. And when the contemporary meets the pioneer the out come is promotion.

Muhammad Rezq
Director of Gezira Arts Center

- Experience and renovation are characteristics of artist Taha Hussein. He is a man of courage when it comes to imagination, and dare in processing the artistic formation according to modern trends and techniques since he accompanied contemporary modern trends. Like `Alba House` he believes in the connectivity between art and life, and artistic designs with industry. Art in its own has unity, and formation has values which appear in architecture, painting and sculpture just as it appears in pots, textile, furniture and all used tools in daily life. Taha Hussein practiced sculpture, painting, drilling, ceramics and carpets. His exhibition displayed types of transformation and development of his art, and follows up the trends of modern language of art.
Badr El-Din Abu Ghaly
- Damka says: `to know him, to befriend with him, to taste his works, and follow its development for over 10 years, this was an adventure to me because Taha Hussein as an artist of graphics and ceramics is a comprehensive one, and he is indulged in surprising his friends and audience with new and unexpected formula of his art. He expects from his audience to adapt with his art and converse with him; whenever they become so close to him, this means that they would contemplate with him and share his pains`.
- What you see for the first time as a reflection with no motivation or a leap into another career is just the road of asking one`s self; the thing that produces exciting results poured into expertise of purpose. Yet, sometimes we forget that each phase of Taha Hussein`s creativity is interacting with the development of contemporary Egyptian Art; and thus it presents solutions of great position universally.
